The Doctor almost didn’t want to pull away. So long without her, so long feeling he’d never see her again, so long thinking of how she hopefully grew up to find a nice young man to take care of her until she slowly lived out a grand life and died of old age.

That’s what she deserved, after all. She’d had so many lives that ended in tragedy because of him. She deserved a peaceful life where she could live out a happy time with someone who would treat her well. She deserved at least that much.

And yet, here she was again, refusing to embrace a peaceful life. Instead prattling on about something. Or maybe she wasn’t. He didn’t really comprehend everything that was going on right at that moment, and his mind was trying to catch up. It had started to slow down, he’d noticed.

It took every effort to try and focus, to breathe correctly, to look at Clara and pay full attention. She’d likely asked something about his age or how long it had been, but he’d really missed the question. Either way, he didn’t really want to discuss that right yet.

“Let’s get you a blanket. You’re cold as ice.” The Doctor muttered, his voice crackling slightly with age as he turned to wobble towards the crowd, holding his hand out for a blanket that one of the citizens had already gone to fetch. He nodded thankfully before wobbling back, the blanket under his free arm as he leaned against his cane with each step.

As he turned to get the blanket, she quickly brought her arms around herself to try and preserve any heat she had, that small smile still on her lips as she looked around. The townspeople surrounding them and looking at her oddly. In their defense she did just materialize with the TARDIS and had a spat with the Doctor right then and there.

She had to admire this though. They looked like they were just having a good time. The Doctor obviously being part of it. He could never really resist anything like that. Where there was fun, there was the Doctor. Always wanting to bring children smiles and fun. She saw the Doctor walking back with the blanket he mentioned just moments before and she did her best to not look so sad.

This place, she’d come to hate it. Even if she was here just for a second time. But a second time was one too many. It all went back to the reasons why her and the Doctor came onto the planet the first time. Because there was a message being projected through all the cosmos. The Doctor said it was a question only he could answer.

                                                                         Doctor Who?

She must’ve spaced because next she knew, the Doctor was wrapping the blanket around her and she looked up at him grabbing it and wrapping it around herself better and tighter. ‘Thanks.'
